In honor of the 35th anniversary of American Eagles, a new design was unveiled in mid-2021, creating a highly sought-after inaugural issue of these popular coins.
For the first time since their introduction in 1986, the Silver Eagle coins received an updated design in mid-2021. This mid-year introduction, coming at a time of unprecedented demand for silver coins, resulted in a very limited supply of coins available at launch. Now the 2023 edition comes with this design.
The American Silver Eagle coin is the official silver coin of the United States. This gives it legal tender status with a face value (which is negligible compared to the real value of the coin, however). Silver Eagle coins are minted by the US Mint, which also guarantees the purity and weight of the coin. This coin has been minted since 1986 and is therefore the oldest government-issued and guaranteed silver coin.
New Silver Eagle design.
In 2020, the United States Mint unveiled a new design for the reverse side of the eagle for 2021. 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of the U.S. Eagle program, and new designs began appearing on these coins in mid-2021. AIP designer Emily Damstra created a new graphic design for the 2021 silver eagle, which was engraved by Mint medalist Michael Gaudioso. The new 2021 American Silver Eagle design depicts a landing eagle carrying an oak branch as if to add it to its nest.
The obverse of the American Eagle features Adolph A. Weinman's full-length figure of Liberty, draped in the folds of the flag, with his right arm outstretched and laurel and oak branches in his left hand. Aesthetically, Silver Eagles are considered the most beautiful silver coins in the world. The "walking liberty" image on the obverse was designed by world-renowned designer Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. This design was originally used on silver half dollars from 1916 to 1947.
American Silver Eagles are the absolute most desirable silver coins in the world. They form a category of their own in the market. Periodically, the US Mint is unable to meet the huge demand for these coins. The premium on Silver Eagle coins is consistently the highest of all one-ounce coins, including those issued by other countries (Canada, Austria,...).
