Wombat, one of Australia's most popular animals, is a marsupial native to the continent. It has adapted to the various challenging conditions in the southern hemisphere. A unique feature of Wombat is its clear evolutionary return bag, which allows the protection of transferred young when digging in the environment of underground burrows. Perfectly built for tunnelling with powerful limbs and claws as well as rodent-like front teeth, these iconic Australian marsupials are the largest burrowing mammals in the world.
The worldwide mintage of the coin is only 25,000 coins and therefore has a high collecting potential.
The coin portrays a coloured representation of a wombat and its ‘joey’. Other design elements include vegetation, gum trees, birds and clouds. As well as the inscription ‘WOMBAT’, the reverse includes a ‘P125’ mintmark signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary, as well as the coin’s weight, purity, and 2024 year-date.
The coin’s obverse bears the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III and the monetary denomination.
Coin incorporates an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. Detectable under a magnifying glass, it is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.
