The Australian Kookaburra was first issued in 1990.
It is a series of silver coins depicting the iconic bird, whose name is derived from the word "gugubarra" from the Wiradjuri Indian tribe. First Nations people, who have lived here for tens of thousands of years, have told numerous stories about the Kookaburra and it has subsequently been featured in contemporary Australian art and literature.
The design for the 33rd Kookaburra coin depicts two birds perched on branches surrounding a waratah (an Australian endemic genus of five species of large shrubs or small trees native to the southeastern parts of Australia). The design includes the inscription "KOOKABURRA", The Perth Mint's traditional mint mark "P", the year 2023 and the weight and purity of the coin.
The reverse side includes a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the country of issue and the monetary denomination.
Each coin is housed in a protective plastic capsule.
