Historically, the first silver bullion coin with New Zealand denomination depicts an extinct crested penguin - Eudyptes warhami, which lived in the Chatham Islands.
In 2019, an international team of scientists extracted mitochondrial DNA from subfossil bones discovered in sand dunes. The scallops of the genus Eudyptes were black and white with yellow crests and had red beaks and eyes. The crested penguins on the island of Chatham are among the largest of the crested penguins.
